Equality
I approach my work with students collaboratively because I know we both have much to contribute. I have experience and knowledge that students and parents don’t, but you know yourself and your contexts, goals, and opinions. (If you don’t yet know these things, I will help you dig them up.) Your struggle needn’t be yours alone; instead, it can be ours to solve.
Empathy & Honesty
Sharing yourself — whether its your work, your process, or your habits — is often a vulnerable experience. People thrive when they’re understood and are willing to be vulnerable when they feel safe. So I strive to listen deeply, truly understand your context, and provide the kind of support you need. Some teachers are afraid to critique students, others are brutally honest. I believe you deserve to know and understand the truth in ways that serve you.
Excellence
Ultimately I aim to strengthen your skills and habits, not just your work. This means that (time permitting) I will teach, provide reasons and context, and ask questions — not just tell you what to do. Where time does not permit for a lengthier learning process, I will strive to strengthen your work rapidly under whatever deadline you face. No matter what, you can expect my utmost professionalism.
